Across the country, firearm-related injuries and deaths are on the rise — especially among youths and young adults. An increase in the number of adolescents experiencing mental health issues and a surge in homicides, unintentional shootings and school-based violence are among the factors contributing to the record number of deaths.

At this member-exclusive event, Center for Health and Biosciences fellow Dr. Bindi Naik-Mathuria discussed firearm safety research and policy- and community-based solutions with the Roundtable Young Professionals.

Bindi Naik-Mathuria, MD, MPH, FACS, FAAP, is the fellow in firearm injury prevention and safety at the Center for Health and Biosciences and a pediatric surgeon and researcher. She is an associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. She developed and led the Level I pediatric trauma program at Texas Children's Hospital for over 10 years and is an avid researcher in pediatric trauma, injury prevention, surgical outcomes and health services.
