Besides the obvious economic and public health consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the novel coronavirus has also impacted waste management procedures and plastic pollution while upending the goal of a circular economy. Crashing oil prices, increased demand for products containing plastic — including medical equipment, personal protective equipment, single-use food containers and plastic water bottles — and the disruption of recycling sector supply/logistic chains could have severe consequences for global sustainability. A panel of experts discussed these and other impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic as they relate to the greater Houston area, which is home to the largest medical center in the world and runs the fourth largest municipal solid waste operation in the United States.
