The Shell Distinguished Lecture Series

Over the years, the Shell Oil Company and Shell International EP, Incorporated have generously demonstrated their commitment to Rice University and to the Baker Institute. The inaugural Shell Distinguished Lecture was presented at the Baker Institute in 1995 as part of a series of presentations on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, discussed his organization’s peacekeeping and peacemaking roles. Since then, an impressive roster of speakers has followed in Boutros-Ghali’s footsteps, including:

  • Madeleine Albright chose the Baker Institute as the site for her first major speech as the 64th United States Secretary of State (1997).
  • Kofi Annan, current Secretary-General of the United Nations, discussed the role of the United Nations in the 21st century and was the institute’s first lecture transmitted live over the Internet, reaching a global audience (1998).
  • An overflow audience of 5,000 people listened to Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela speak about the need for U.N. members to resolve their conflicts through peaceful means (1999).
  • Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, offered his assessment of what lies ahead for the energy industry in the wake of the September 11 tragedy (2001).
  • Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, outlined his vision for his country’s future and ways the U.S. and Russia could cooperate (2001).
  • King Abdullah II, King of Jordan, called for the United States to create a peace alliance for the Middle East, where a U.S.-led coalition of European, Arab, and other countries would provide the security, economic, and political support to both Israelis and Palestinians (2002).
