Baker Institute Rice Undergraduate Internship Program

The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy regularly offers intern positions to Rice undergraduate students. The internship program is designed to provide Rice university undergraduate students with experience working in issues of public policy and in a non-profit environment. The internships are oriented towards providing students with research experience, writing and editing opportunities, office administration experience, and experience working events and representing the Baker Institute to our sponsors.

When to Apply: The internship program application process is on a rolling basis. Therefore, we consider and accept applicants as they apply and according to our needs and internship availability at the time. Baker Institute Graduate Student Internship Program

The Science and Technology Policy Program also offers unpaid internship opportunities to graduate students in the Houston Area. The internship program is designed to provide graduate students with the chance to work on issues of public policy and in a non-profit environment. Graduate interns are oriented towards assisting Fellows and Program Staff in the publication of research publications, policy reports and conference proceedings, as well as toward gaining valuable experience hosting events and representing the Baker Institute to our sponsors.

Baker Institute High School Student Internship Program

The Science and Technology Policy Program also offers unpaid internship opportunities to high school students from the Houston Area during the summer. The internship program is designed to provide students with the chance to work on issues of public policy and in a non-profit environment. The internships are oriented towards providing students with research experience, writing and editing opportunities, and office administration experience.

The Jesse Jones Leadership Center Summer in D.C. Policy Research Internship Program

Sponsored by Houston Endowment Inc. and other generous benefactors, the goal of this unique program is to offer returning Rice University undergraduate students hands-on experience in the world of public policy research and analysis. Initiated in 2003, the program will provide stipends sufficient to support a select group of Rice undergraduates conducting policy-making research at government agencies, private think tanks, and NGOs in Washington, D.C. in the summer following each academic year. Those accepted must be currently enrolled as full-time undergraduates through the following fall semester after summer participation in the program. A committee of Baker Institute researchers and Rice faculty select each summer's participants. Those selected will attend a seminar on public policy and global affairs coterminous with their internships in DC, write a research report for publication and presentation before Rice faculty and researchers at the beginning of the following fall semester, and also organize a public policy education activity for the following academic year. Applicants are individually responsible for selecting and establishing internships and residency in DC.

Eligibility Requirements: Non-Graduating Rice University Undergraduate Students. Interested students should contact Dr. Steven Lewis by email at swlewis@rice.edu. Applications are typically due by January 31st for that summer's applicant pool and can be mailed to the attention of Dr. Lewis to the Baker Institute-MS40.
