Assistant Professor of Sociology Director, Program for the Study of Leadership, Institute for Urban Research
D. Michael Lindsay, Ph.D., is assistant professor of sociology at Rice University, where he is also a Rice scholar at the Baker Institute, the faculty associate of Leadership Rice and the director of the Program for the Study of Leadership at the Institute for Urban Research. He has been honored by the International Sociological Association and the International Leadership Association, as well as by the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Association for the Sociology of Religion. His research has been published in the leading scholarly journals of sociology, religion and American studies. He is also the author of the Pulitzer-nominated book “Faith in the Halls of Power” (Oxford, 2007) and is currently working on a book about the White House Fellowship based on his recently released research about the program and its role in American democracy. Lindsay served for several years as the consultant for religion and culture to the George H. Gallup International Institute. There, he directed several national surveys on a range of topics and co-authored two books with George Gallup Jr. Lindsay has appeared frequently in the national media and on the lecture circuit discussing matters surrounding leadership, faith and society. A Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude graduate of Baylor University, Lindsay earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he was a presidential scholar. He earned an additional degree at Oxford as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. Lindsay earned his Ph.D. in sociology at Princeton University, where he was named a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow and a Harold W. Dodds Fellow. He also received the 2003 Outstanding Teaching Award for graduate student teaching from Princeton’s Graduate School and the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni.
