Ambassador T. Hamid Al-Bayati was appointed permanent representative of Iraq to the United Nations (U.N.) in April 2006. From 2004 to 2006, he worked as deputy minister of foreign affairs for political affairs and bilateral relations, and headed the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies. Upon arriving in New York in 2006, Al-Bayati was elected chair of the U.N. Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee — the second time an Iraqi representative had presided over a committee since the establishment of the U.N. During this time, Iraq also became a member state of the U.N. Economic and Social Council. Furthermore, Al-Bayati is one of the vice presidents of the General Assembly for its 62nd session. Among many other professional accomplishments. Al-Bayati was a member of the supervising committee that oversaw the workof INDICT, an organization dedicated to bringing Iraqi war criminals to justice. Al-Bayati obtained a bachelor’s degree at Baghdad University, a master’s degree at Cairo University and a Ph.D. in politics from Manchester University in England. He has written many books and research papers in Arabic and English, including “The Shiite of Iraq,” “The Bloody History of Saddam Hussein Al Takriti,” “Fall of the Evil” and “The Terrorism Game.”
