Event Description

In 2007, the National Petroleum Council’s “Hard Truths” study concluded that the world would need increased energy efficiency and a greater energy supply. Since then, significant technology advances have unlocked abundant natural gas and oil resources. These greatly expanded resources have already benefited our country economically, resulting in lower natural gas prices and the revitalization of many U.S. industries. New supplies and extraction techniques also improve the economics of utilizing gas for power generation and offer an alternative in the transportation sphere — meaning that greater use of North American natural gas stands to reduce emissions and strengthen America’s energy security. The National Petroleum Council report “Prudent Development: Realizing the Potential of North America’s Abundant Natural Gas and Oil Resources” provides recommendations for the market potential and sustainable development of this resource. At this workshop, key study leaders will present the report’s findings viewed through economic, environmental and national security lenses.
