Event Description

Congress is considering health care reform legislation that, as it stands now, could result in millions of children facing higher costs for fewer health care benefits, according to the Children’s Defense Fund and other advocacy groups. Changes are needed to make it easier for children to enroll in comprehensive and affordable health coverage.

A news conference on Tuesday, September 1, will urge Congress to ensure changes are made to legislation that guarantees the needs of children are met. Scheduled speakers include:

  • State Representative Ellen Cohen
  • Lan Bentsen, chairman, Children’s Defense Fund–Texas Advisory Board; Member, Greater Houston Partnership
  • Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO, Children at Risk
  • Dr. Vivian Ho, James A. Baker III Institute Chair in Health Economics and author of the 2009 Baker Institute report “The Economic Impact of Uninsured Children on America”
  • Dr. Laura Guerra-Cardus, interim director/policy director, Children’s Defense Fund-Texas
  • Anne Dunkelberg, associate director, Center for Public Policy Priorities
  • Maureen Haver, Houston director, Texans Together
  • R. King Hillier, vice president, Public Policy & Government Relations, Harris County Hospital District
  • Parents of uninsured children
