Event Description

This lecture series features significant public intellectuals and governmental figures from Mexico addressing topics including fine arts, energy, development, immigration and security. The goal of this discussion is to foster cross-border collaboration and understanding between Mexico and the United States. This series inaugurates the Humanities Research Center’s Public Humanities Initiative, a program that presents important speakers to public audiences, addressing matters of broad humanistic concern as well as public interest. Teresa Franco, General Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, will discuss culture and fine arts for the first lecture of the series. She has been president of the Mexican Committee of Historical Sciences and of UNESCO's World Patrimony Committee. Franco also has been chair of the history department at the Universidad Iberoamericana and director of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. From 2000 to 2006 she was director of the publishing house Editorial México Interactivo. She is a member of several cultural associations in Mexico and abroad and has done vast archival research. Some of her publications include "Mundo Azteca," "Mil tres textos sobre la historia de la frontera norte, Y por todos habló la Revolución," and the journal Arqueología Mexicana.
