The International Space Medicine Summit (ISMS) 2010 brings together leading physicians and space biomedical scientists from space-faring nations for high-level discussions on research needed to prevent and/or mitigate the medical and biomedical challenges associated with long-duration space flight.
Building on the recommendations of the first three summits, the goal of ISMS 2010 is to stimulate and facilitate multinational collaborations on how best to maximize the utilization of the International Space Station (ISS) for research to ensure the well-being of astronauts and cosmonauts on future expeditions.
In accordance with the unanimous consensus reached by the multinational participants in last year’s summit, ISMS 2010 will work to identify and focus on high priority research projects, both space-based and ground-based, that require international collaboration in order to succeed. ISMS 2010 is committed to:
- fostering increased communication and cooperation;
- focusing on lessons learned from long-duration human space flight and analog environments such as Devon Island, the Antarctic, NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO), and the multinational, 105-day ground-based simulation study;
- and research efforts to enhance life on Earth by applying the resultant advances in human knowledge and technology acquired through living and working in space.
